I can't join because - Frequently Asked Questions

Q. I can't read music will that be a problem?

A. Believe me, you are amongst friends! The conductor and accompanist are the specialists. As in any male voice choir, there may be a handful of musicians or experienced choristers who can also read music with some competence. However the rest of us, and I'm talking over 80% of members, will use the sheet music as a guide. If we're not hitting the right note, the conductor soon puts us straight. So come and join the 80%, we always get it right in the end!

Q. What type of people join the choir?

A. There is no type. The best comparison I can make is a village cricket team, 'from the squire to the blacksmith,' there's a place for everyone. We are all there for the same reason, we all enjoy singing!

Q. I live so far away, can I car share?

A. Approximately one half of the choir live in Bury St.Edmunds. The remainder travel from near and far, such is our popularity. Our present catchment area stretches from Stowmarket in the east, to Haverhill in the west and from Thetford in the north to Bishop Stortford in the south.

After you have joined, you wil receive a choir register, listing the members and their addresses. Several members choose to share the travelling and the opportunity is there if you wish.

Q. Which section do I sing with?

A. There are four sections in a MVC:

Top Tenor - Second Tenor - Baritone - Bass

New members are invited to sing where they think they're best suited, but may move if they find the range of notes too taxing. Our conductor is there to advise you if you prefer guidance from an expert.

Q. Will I know anyone?

A. We have over 80 names on our register, which may appear somewhat daunting when you don't know anyone from Adam! However, you must remember, we have all been in the same situation and appreciate your predicament. You will be made most welcome and will soon get to know a whole bunch of friendly faces. Our Rogues Gallery is on display especially for new members to identify others.

The social aspect of the choir is as important as the rehearsals. We not only have a coffee break, several members choose to meet at a nearby pub for a swift one (or two) after.

Q. When will I have to sing in a concert?

A. As a new member, just come along and find out what it's all about. In time, you'll gradually become familiar with the current repertoire and eventually, you'll want to join us on stage.

If you have any other queries please do not hesitate to contact me, Nick Gane - membership secretary. In the meantime, I look forward to welcoming you to your first rehearsal.

Don't put it off. Give it a go!!!
