Bacharach and Beyond

For this, the fourth CD by St Edmundsbury Male Voice Choir we celebrate the songs of Burt Bacharach. The American composer, songwriter, record producer, and pianist is widely regarded as one of the most important and influential figures of twentieth century popular music. Bacharach worked extensively with Hal David whose lyrics resonate long in the memory.

We obtained the necessary permissions to have Bacharach and David arrangements written specifically for the choir. After performing the songs in concert we recorded our favourites at The Apex in Bury St Edmunds in early 2020. Unfortunately, the Covid epidemic intervened and delayed the creation of this CD for three years.

We engaged the services of three arrangers to create the songs including those of Bacharach and David’s songs specifically for St Edmundsbury Male Voice Choir.

Jeffrey Howard BEM studied music at Cardiff University and the Royal Academy. He is an arranger, vocal coach, pianist, organist and accompanist, working with some of the country’s most famous singers, choirs and orchestras. Jeffrey was for several years Music Director of the world famous Treorchy Male Voice Choir.

Edmund Thomson Jones grew up singing in choirs, first as a chorister at Ripon Cathedral in North Yorkshire, then as a Choral Scholar at Worcester College, Oxford, and latterly in several ensembles in London including the Cheapside Camarata and Evoke. He is a composer and arranger of choral music, having been Musical Director of Out of the Blue while at Oxford, and writing for various choirs and ensembles.

In addition, the choir’s own Glenn Warriner arranged The Look of Love another Bacharach and David song.

Also included are songs that are concert favourites.

All the songs were mastered and orchestrated by Mark Jefferson our Music Director drawing on his 23 years’ experience with the choir.
